Bangkok/London - Burma Human Rights Network is pleased to announce the release of its newest report, “Brazen Tyranny of the Myanmar Military.” BHRN’s latest report highlights the Burmese military's human rights violations and cruelty in the year following the military coup on 1 February 2021.
In the past year, the Burmese military has unleashed new military campaigns throughout the country, tortured and murdered civilians, burned down entire villages, and used sexual violence as a weapon of war. In response, the peaceful protests have evolved in some cases into ‘self-defense’ units, and the threat of a full-blown civil war lingers over the country skirmishes have begun in previously calm areas, and war resumed in ethnic regions. A new refugee crisis has already started as hundreds of thousands have been displaced by the fighting.

11 December 2021 - London, UK - Burma Human Rights Network applauds new sanctions against the Burmese military regime by the US, UK, and Canada. These new sanctions target The Quarter Master General’s Office, The Directorate for Defence Industries, The Directorate for defence Procurement, and The Myanmar War Veterans Organisation. These departments either bolster the military leadership or directly contribute to the junta’s ability to obtain and use weapons against civilians.

Burma Human Rights Network condemns the Burmese military’s attacks on civilians in the strongest possible terms. Most recently, the military shelled the town of Thanlang and set fire to homes and churches. As of now 163 homes and three churches were destroyed. Local residents blamed the Burmese military for starting the fires, a tactic that is part of the “Kill all, burn all, and destroy all” strategy they are documented using against other ethnic and religious minorities. Tensions in Chin State have dramatically escalated over the past month with the junta building up their troop presence in the state and attacking civilians regularly. Chin State is majority Christian and ethnic minority and the junta has a longstanding history of targeting religious and ethnic minorities.
